Recent figures from the annual Skills for Care report have revealed that in August 2021, 8.2% of all care sector roles were unfilled.
The requirement for care workers to be double vaccinated against COVID-19 by November 11th is only adding further to the skills shortage crisis: NHS England data suggests that more than 41,000 care home workers may not have had their second jab by the deadline, forcing them out of the sector and putting huge strain on care homes as they navigate a challenging and uncertain winter.
The Guardian also surveyed a snapshot of 34 independent care providers, and more than half believed they would lose six or more staff as a result of the requirement to be fully vaccinated.
The good news is that – despite a challenging couple of years – there are still plenty of people out there who want to work in the care sector. From college-leavers and graduates, to those who want to retrain and take their career in a new direction, the care sector is increasingly appealing to a wider talent pool.
More than ever, job-seekers are realising that care work is not only one of the most rewarding career paths they could choose – it also offers long-term employment prospects with job security and genuine opportunities for progression.

In turn, this will help to improve your staff retention and give you the reassurance that you won’t be left back at square one in terms of filling vacancies.
