What compliance checks do I need to undertake to work in healthcare?

Working in healthcare is one of the most rewarding vocations there is! Supporting people to live enriching, fulfilling lives and helping people when they need it most is without a doubt one of the greatest gifts that you can offer in your working career.

Starting out in a career in healthcare can be a bit more of a lengthy process than with other jobs – mainly due to compliance checks that need to take place as part of the hiring process. The healthcare sector is heavily regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) who request that care providers conduct a range of measures to safeguard individuals in care.

In this article, we’d like to share with you some of the information you’ll need to provide in order to start your career in healthcare. We’ve listed the headlines below and included links to various pieces of guidance that you may find informative.

How can Workforce help you move to the UK?

Right to work

Right to work

Like with any job, you’ll need to be able to prove you have the right to work in the UK. The easiest way to do this is usually with a UK or EU passport. However, there’re other routes including identity cards.

DBS

Enhanced DBS disclosure

In essence, this is a criminal clearance – it searches the UK national police database and reports back any convictions or cautions in your name and any record held on the Adults or Children’s Barred Lists. As part of obtaining this disclosure you’ll have to provide a number of key pieces of information including:

1. Your mother’s maiden name
2.Your maiden name
3.Any other names you’ve ever been known by
4.Details regarding your nationality

Address history

Five year address history and proof of current address

In order to search all the necessary local police authorities for your DNBS, you will need to provide you employer with full details of your address history for the last 5 years and information regarding your current address.

Job history

Full employment history

A “full employment history” means a career history from the age of first employment. This information may be in the form of a Curriculum Vitae but need not be. This must cover all places of employment, including any gaps in employment and reasons for leaving.

References

References

References will be requested in writing and must come from registered email address from the organisation. Ordinarily, references must cover at least your most recent employer and 1 other from your last 5 years of employment. If you have ever worked in a care setting, we will also need to apply for references from there too (referencing requirements can vary form employer to employer).

NI number

Proof of NI number

This can be on a letter from HMRC, a P45 or P60, a Payslip or a NI Number Card.
